FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
How often should I clean my geldings sheath:
Over cleaning should be avoided as much as possible otherwise the normal bacteria’s are removed which then will allow fungal overgrowth to take place so on average every 6-12 months is recommended.
What is smegma and a “bean”:
The smegma build up is more common in the winter months especially if the horse is overweight as fat is partly stored in the sheath. Smegma build up can lead to discomfort, swelling or even infections. A build up of smegma in the urethral fossa, a small cavity in the top of the penis, is called a “bean”. A “bean” can range from horse to horse. Not all horses will have one, some may have small ones and in some cases very large ones. This can causes difficulty urinating, Often painful for the gelding, Swelling on the sheath aswell as just general discomfort and irritation.
